About Us
The Islesboro Transfer Station is located "Up Island" on Meadow Pond Road. We handle all solid waste removal on the island, aside from a handful of businesses and residents who contract private services. Every two weeks the waste and recycling is transported to a sorting facility in Charlestown, MA.
Zero-Sort Recycling & Other Materials
The "Zero Sort Recycling and Transfer Station Rules" document should help you prepare for your next trip to the transfer station. Largely, we dispose of items using one of the following methods.
- Recycle
Our station uses a zero-sort recycling container allowing us to drop all recyclable materials into one container regardless of size, shape, or consistency. However, if you're forfeiting your deposit on returnable bottles please put the bottles in a separate container as this will help contribute to the Town. - Trash
Trash goes in the clear Town of Islesboro bags. If you are not composting food debris then include it in your trash bag. - Demolition
Other bulky waste such as large metal objects, appliances, and renovation debris go in a separate 40 yard roll-off containers located at the Transfer Station. These recyclable materials are transported off-island to special sorting facilities.
Remember to adhere to the following guidelines:
- All solid waste must be placed inside properly designated “Town of Islesboro” trash bags.
- Smaller trash bags may be placed inside the official Islesboro bags however, they must be both plastic and transparent.
- Town trash bags (13 gallon and 30 gallon) can be purchased at the Town Office, Island Market, or transfer station.
Frequent Questions
